New Orleans, Louisiana – In a stunning reversal of fortune, Corey Esquerre, 50, from Jefferson Parish, was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the distribution of over three and a half pounds of methamphetamine. The case marks a significant victory for federal law enforcement.
Esquerre pleaded guilty on June 6, 2024, before United States District Judge Wendy B. Vitter, admitting to violating the Federal Controlled Substances Act by possessing with intent to distribute at least fifty grams of Schedule II methamphetamine.
Court documents revealed that Gretna Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) conducted a search of Esquerre’s apartment on July 31, 2023. Inside, agents uncovered a toolbox harboring bags filled with methamphetamine. The DEA Laboratory confirmed the substances as 1880.1 grams of pure methamphetamine.
Esquerre now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and could spend the rest of his life behind bars. He is also subject to a fine totaling up to $10,000,000, up to five years of supervised release, and a special assessment fee of $100.00. His sentencing hearing has been set for September 19, 2024.
The case was the result of a joint investigation by the DEA and the Gretna Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Sarver of the Narcotics Unit is overseeing the prosecution.
This conviction sends a chilling message to those who would dare traffic in illegal substances within our borders, demonstrating the commitment of federal law enforcement to uprooting drug trafficking networks and keeping our communities safe.
