Jenna Nichole Castaneda, Benefit Fraud, Idaho 2024

Jenna Nichole Castaneda, 30, of Twin Falls, Idaho, is headed down a road of reckoning after being sentenced to five years of probation for a five-year run of calculated benefit fraud. The woman knowingly and repeatedly lied to federal and state agencies, gaming the system for personal gain while legitimate beneficiaries were left in the dust.

Court records reveal Castaneda misrepresented her husband’s income to the Social Security Administration between 2013 and 2018, securing $42,451.41 in Supplemental Security Income benefits for herself and her child—money she was never entitled to. But that was just the start. She filed for additional aid through the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, again falsifying financial details to fraudulently obtain Medicaid, SNAP, and Aid to the Aged, Blind, and Disabled benefits totaling $64,842.22.

Altogether, Castaneda stole $107,293.73 in taxpayer-funded assistance meant for society’s most vulnerable. The fraud wasn’t a one-time mistake—it was a sustained campaign of deception, stretching across half a decade, eroding trust in programs designed to protect those in genuine need.

Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye didn’t mince words in sentencing, ordering full restitution of $107,293.73 to be paid to the Social Security Administration and Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. Castaneda pleaded guilty on January 22, 2021, but the damage was already done—years of false claims had already drained resources from overburdened public systems.

“Castaneda’s criminal conduct lasted for five years, undermining SSA’s mission to provide for the vulnerable among us,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Rafael M. Gonzalez, Jr. He praised investigators for their relentless pursuit of accountability. “I commend the investigators for their steadfast commitment to ensuring justice in this case.”

Agencies involved didn’t hold back in their condemnation. Christian Assaad, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration OIG, Seattle Field Division, called the actions “criminal” and emphasized that SSI is a needs-based program—not a piggy bank for the dishonest. HHS-OIG’s Special Agent in Charge Steven J. Ryan added, “Her attempts to line her pockets betrayed the Medicaid program, other beneficiaries who rely on the program’s financial stability, and the general public.” The case was a joint takedown by SSA-OIG, HHS-OIG, USDA-OIG, and Idaho DHW—a clear message that benefit fraud won’t go unchecked.
