Parmelee Man Sentenced to 7 Years for Gun Crimes

In a shocking turn of events, Jeremy Duane Young, a 29-year-old Parmelee resident, was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison for possessing an unregistered firearm, being a prohibited person to possess a firearm, and assaulting a federal officer.

The crime took place on May 15, 2022, in the Soldier Creek community within the Rosebud Reservation. Young, a previously convicted felon, was found in possession of a short-barrel 12-gauge shotgun, which was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record as required by law.

Young’s possession of the firearm led to a series of events that resulted in his arrest. According to the investigation, Young was on his way to Sioux Falls on a drug run to pick up methamphetamine at the time of his arrest.

The assault conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on March 22, 2023, also in the Soldier Creek community. Young became argumentative and combative with a Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Officer who had been called to the scene to investigate a running vehicle blocking the roadway. Young punched the officer in the face and fled on foot before being located and arrested an hour later.

Young was indicted by a federal grand jury in March 2023 on the firearm offenses and in April 2023 on the assault offense. The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Meghan N. Dilges and Brian Murphy.

Young was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $300. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities.

Young’s case is a stark reminder of the dangers of possessing unregistered firearms and the consequences of assaulting law enforcement officers. As we continue to work towards making our communities safer, it is essential that we hold individuals accountable for their actions.

We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
