New Orleans, LA – In a stark reminder of the consequences for those who defy U.S. immigration laws, Joel Flores-Gonzales, a 42-year-old native of Mexico, was sentenced to eight months of imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release and a $100 special assessment fee.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans revealed that the defendant had pleaded guilty to a one-count indictment for illegal reentry of a removed alien. This egregious offense is a clear violation of U.S. immigration laws and demonstrates the importance of adhering to the country’s regulations.
According to court documents, Florez-Gonzales was found in the United States on March 12, 2018, after having been previously deported from the United States on June 20, 2016. This brazen disregard for U.S. immigration authorities’ efforts to remove him from the country has consequences.
The defendant’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and a clear disregard for the efforts of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to maintain the integrity of U.S. immigration laws.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of ICE agents in investigating this matter, acknowledging their tireless efforts to uphold the law and keep U.S. communities safe.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon Maestri is in charge of the prosecution. The defendant will be surrendered to the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal proceedings.
Flores-Gonzales will serve his eight-month sentence followed by a year of supervised release, during which time he will be subject to strict guidelines and monitoring. The $100 special assessment fee is a mere fraction of the cost of his actions.
