Cocaine Trafficker Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison
A notorious cocaine trafficker has been sentenced to 60 months in prison following a guilty plea to possessing with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.
Johnny Lamar Sawyer, 31, of Southfield, Michigan, was sentenced by United States District Court Senior Judge James T. Moody after pleading guilty to the crime. The sentencing occurred in Hammond, Indiana, on an undisclosed date.
According to court documents, Sawyer flew into Chicago’s Midway Airport on August 17, 2020, with one suitcase containing approximately 10 pounds of cocaine. A traffic stop in Porter County, Indiana, later that day resulted in the seizure of the cocaine.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, with the assistance of the Indiana State Police. Assistant United States Attorney David J. Nozick prosecuted the case.
Sawyer will serve 60 months in prison followed by 2 years of supervised release.
The cocaine trafficking case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat illicit drug trade in the region.
