A one-year-old child nearly died from a cocaine overdose in Maple Shade, New Jersey, after being exposed to a methamphetamine lab. Daniel Garcia Jr., 29, rushed the child to the hospital, but not before the minor’s urine tested positive for cocaine, benzodiazepine, and fentanyl.
Garcia, a Burlington County man, pleaded guilty to possession of over 50 grams of methamphetamine and possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. On June 23, 2024, Garcia and another individual rushed the minor victim to the hospital after the child stopped breathing and was unresponsive.
Medical personnel at the children’s hospital informed law enforcement that the minor had been administered benzodiazepine and fentanyl during treatment, but that cocaine had not been administered. A doctor at the children’s hospital told law enforcement that the minor’s symptoms—including seizure and cardiac arrest—were consistent with a cocaine overdose.
Garcia was sentenced to 211 months in prison by Chief United States District Judge Renée M. Bumb in Camden federal court. U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer vowed to aggressively pursue traffickers who flood neighborhoods with drugs and arm themselves to protect their profits.
