TAMPA, FL – Jordan Tito, 23, of Tampa, is staring down federal prison time after pleading guilty to aggravated identity theft, according to a statement released today by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Tito peddled stolen personal information, including the details of vulnerable children, for a mere $10 a pop.
The scheme unraveled in September 2016 when a confidential informant approached investigators with a disturbing offer: Tito was selling lists of names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. These weren’t just random digits; they were the keys to financial ruin for unsuspecting victims, ripe for exploitation through counterfeit credit cards, fake IDs, and widespread credit fraud.
During a single meeting that month, Tito handed over approximately 86 stolen identities to the CI, each neatly printed on a separate sheet of paper. The scope of the damage is chilling: among those compromised, 29 were children. Tito knowingly put these kids at risk of a lifetime of credit complications, all for a quick $860.
Federal investigators from the U.S. Secret Service, working alongside the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, quickly zeroed in on Tito. The investigation revealed a blatant disregard for the harm inflicted on the victims. The ease with which Tito obtained and distributed this sensitive information is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of identity theft.
U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III, emphasized the seriousness of the crime. Tito now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in federal prison.
