Raleigh Man Gets 15 Years for Fentanyl Trafficking
A federal judge has handed down a 15-year prison sentence to Joshua McClain, 31, for his role in a fentanyl trafficking operation in Cary, North Carolina. McClain pleaded guilty to trafficking fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine out of a Cary hotel room.
The investigation began in January 2024 after law enforcement observed suspected drug activity at a Raleigh motel. During a search, officers found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and cash on McClain. He was released on bond but was caught again when staff at the Cary hotel discovered multiple bags of narcotics hidden inside the lining of an ironing board.
Following his re-arrest, McClain was found to have even more drugs concealed on his body, including additional fentanyl, fluorofentanyl, and cocaine. He was being processed at the Wake County Detention Center when the discovery was made.
U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle called McClain a repeat offender who fueled the fentanyl crisis. Boyle’s statement emphasized the seriousness of McClain’s conduct and the commitment to holding repeat offenders accountable.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Aria Q. Merle prosecuted the case, which involved the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Cary Police Department, the Holly Springs Police Department, and the Raleigh Police Department.
The sentencing reflects McClain’s serious offense and the consequences of his actions. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and protect the community.
