A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City returned multiple indictments against four alleged Mexican nationals and one U.S. citizen for alleged cocaine trafficking.
The four alleged Mexican nationals include Juan Garcia, 32, of Tijuana, Mexico; Alejandro Morales, 35, of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico; Carlos Sanchez, 28, of Mexicali, Mexico; and Daniel Hernandez, 29, of Guadalajara, Mexico. The U.S. citizen charged is identified as 38-year-old Michael Lee of Salt Lake City.
The indictment alleges that the defendants conspired to distribute cocaine in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Homeland Security Task Force seized approximately 52.38 pounds of narcotics during a two-day period last month.
The total weight of the narcotics seized is approximately 23,759.17 grams. The indictment charges the defendants with conspiracy to distribute cocaine, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney, [Name withheld], of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah. The investigation was led by the Homeland Security Task Force.
The defendants are scheduled to appear in court on April 10, 2024, for an arraignment hearing. If convicted, they face significant prison time and fines. The case is a prime example of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the flow of narcotics into the United States.
