Mobile’s streets have once again felt the heavy hand of justice as Thomas Jefferson Laffitte, a repeat offender with an extensive criminal history, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for illegal firearm possession. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge Kristi K. DuBose on May 19, 2017.
Laffitte’s crime, which occurred on July 23, 2016, in Mobile, Alabama, violated 18 USC § 922(g)(1). The defendant, who had entered a guilty plea before the Court on February 15, 2017, now faces a long stretch behind bars following his conviction.
The investigation that led to Laffitte’s conviction was a collaborative effort between federal and local law enforcement. The United States Marshals Service-Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office were instrumental in bringing this case to court. Assistant United States Attorney Lawrence J. Bullard, representing the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama, prosecuted the case with unwavering determination.
As part of his sentence, Laffitte will also be subject to 3 years of supervised release upon his release from prison. This punishment is a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who violate federal firearms laws in the state of Alabama.
This case serves as a cautionary tale for other potential offenders and underscores the commitment of federal law enforcement agencies to keep communities safe from those who would wield illegal weapons.
Thomas Jefferson Laffitte’s sentence is now a matter of public record, ensuring that his criminal actions will not be forgotten. The court’s decision sends a clear message: illegal firearm possession in Alabama comes with severe penalties.
