Lancaster County Man Sentenced for Marijuana and Firearm

A 23-year-old man from Lancaster County, South Carolina, has been sentenced to 64 months in prison for possession with the intent to distribute marijuana and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Martiquos Javon McIlwain was sentenced by United States District Judge Joseph F. Anderson, Jr. of Columbia, South Carolina, and also ordered to serve five years of supervised release and pay a special assessment of $200.

According to evidence presented at the change of plea hearing, McIlwain was involved in a burglary in Lancaster County and was the owner of a white pickup truck with a dealer’s tag. The truck’s owner reported that McIlwain had not returned the vehicle nor responded to telephone calls.

As officers searched for the vehicle, they spotted a black Lexus driven by McIlwain’s co-defendant Reco Cauthen and three other individuals. The officers knew these individuals were mentioned as receivers of stolen items. When they began to follow the car, McIlwain jumped out and began to run, but was caught and found with 88 grams of marijuana, a stolen 9mm pistol, and other evidence.

The case was investigated by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorney William K. Witherspoon prosecuted the case.

This case was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state and local Project CeaseFire initiative, which aggressively prosecutes firearm cases.
