LaQuinta Q. Fisher, Earned Income Credit Tax Fraud, Oklahoma 2016
LaQuinta Q. Fisher, a former tax return preparer from Lawton, Oklahoma, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for an Earned Income Credit Tax Fraud scheme involving false reporting of income and dependents. Fisher was charged with advising her clients that all they needed was a dependent child in order to receive a refund from the government, and then falsifying returns for clients by adding fictitious income to increase the earned income credit (EIC) and by adding false dependents to maximize the EIC, which resulted in false refund claims.
Fisher, who was self-taught in tax return preparation, recruited clients by word of mouth and by distribution of flyers. She prepared and submitted the returns for her clients electronically to the IRS for tax years 2010 through 2014.
According to an indictment on August 17, 2016, Fisher pled guilty on October 5, 2016, and on today, she was sentenced by United States District Judge David Russell to serve 18 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Fisher was also ordered to pay $133,955 in restitution to the IRS.
This case is the result of an investigation by IRS-Criminal Investigations and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rozia McKinney-Foster. Fisher’s scheme involved numerous clients and resulted in significant financial losses for the government.
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit available to eligible working individuals and families. However, Fisher’s actions demonstrate the importance of vigilance in ensuring the integrity of the tax system.
As a result of Fisher’s actions, the IRS has taken steps to increase oversight and verification of tax returns, particularly those claiming the EITC.
The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement and the justice system to protecting the public from financial crimes and ensuring the integrity of the tax system.
