PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Mark Laughner, 38, a resident of Pittsburgh, has been locked behind bars after being sentenced to 70 months for his May 2024 heist at a Reserve Township bank.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon on September 4, 2025. In addition to prison time, Laughner is ordered to pay restitution to the bank he robbed.
Laughner’s crime spree began on May 16, 2024, when he donned a baseball cap and neck gaiter to cover his face, entering the bank with the intent to steal. Threatening the teller with violence, he made off with $1,370 before being spotted on surveillance footage.
Allegheny County Police Department detectives were quick to act, obtaining an arrest warrant for Laughner. On May 20, they attempted to apprehend him as he fled in a vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase that ended with the suspect escaping on foot. A K-9 unit finally tracked down the defendant after a lengthy search.
Assistant United States Attorney V. Joseph Sonson prosecuted the case against Laughner, while law enforcement efforts were led by the Allegheny County Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation. This operation is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime in our communities.
The PSN strategy includes fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results. Laughner’s sentence underscores the commitment to keeping neighborhoods safe from such violent acts.
