A Lexington man’s reign of fentanyl terror came crashing down as Laurance Newby, 38, was sentenced to 180 months behind bars for armed fentanyl trafficking. The case unfolded between December 2024 and June 2025 when a confidential informant bought fentanyl from Newby on three occasions. The final straw came on June 25, 2025, when a drug-sniffing dog gave a positive alert on Newby’s car. He took off on foot but was eventually caught.
A search of Newby’s vehicle turned up a loaded Glock 26 and 996.4 grams of cocaine in a backpack, with 439.8 grams of fentanyl stashed in the trunk. Newby copped to intending to distribute the goods and using the firearm to further his trafficking operation.
Under federal law, Newby will serve at least 85% of his sentence. He’ll be on supervised release for five years after his stint in the joint. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove.
