A Lincoln, Illinois, man, Curtis Kelly, 35, has been handed a lengthy prison sentence for his role in a major methamphetamine distribution ring.
Kelly was sentenced to 156 months in prison, to be followed by a 5-year term of supervised release, by U.S. District Judge Colleen R. Lawless on April 23, 2024. The sentence brings a close to a case that has been in the works since January 2023, when Kelly was indicted for his crimes.
Kelly pleaded guilty to the charges in August 2023 and has been detained by the United States Marshals Service since December 21, 2022. The government presented evidence at sentencing that Kelly had conspired with Darryl Verser and Richard Dinger to distribute approximately 13 kilograms of methamphetamine in November and December of 2022.
Specific drug transactions were cited as evidence of Kelly’s involvement in the distribution ring. Dinger, another key player in the conspiracy, is set to be sentenced on May 17, 2024. The charges against Verser and another co-defendant, Nicholas Steele, remain pending. It’s worth noting that an indictment is merely an accusation, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The statutory penalties for distributing methamphetamine are severe, with a maximum sentence of up to life imprisonment, a fine of up to $10,000,000, and a life term of supervised release. Kelly’s sentence falls well within these guidelines, and it’s clear that the government took a tough stance on his crimes.
The case against Kelly was investigated by a team of law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Illinois State Police, and Peoria Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Z. Weir represented the government in the prosecution.
