EXCLUSIVE: Former Yale New Haven Health Systems Employee Admits to Embezzling $116,260.41
Lorita Fair, 51, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, formerly of New Haven, has pleaded guilty to one count of theft in connection with healthcare. The crime took place in 2020 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
According to court documents, Lorita Fair began working in the payroll department of Yale New Haven Health Systems (YNHHS) as a temporary employee in January 2020. In May 2020, she was hired as a full-time employee as a Payroll Processing Associate at YNHHS.
Between June and December 2020, Fair caused a total of $116,260.41 in fraudulent payroll payments to be made to herself and two other individuals. She made fraudulent entries in the YNHHS payroll system, either by directly entering the payments into the online system or by manually adding lines to a spreadsheet.
The other two individuals then kicked back to Fair a portion of the fraudulent payroll funds they each received. Fair has agreed to make full restitution to YNHHS.
U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley scheduled sentencing for July 27. Fair faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years. She is currently released on a $50,000 bond pending sentencing.
This ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of YNHHS. Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Sheldon is prosecuting the case.
Lorita Fair’s guilty plea is a serious blow to the healthcare system, which relies on the integrity of its employees to provide quality care to patients. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
