A 60-year-old Saint Bernard man has been sentenced to serve 69 months in prison for his role in a large-scale drug trafficking operation that distributed fentanyl, cocaine, and other controlled substances in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Robert C. Metzler, 60, was sentenced on April 23, 2024, after being convicted of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute carisoprodol, as well as possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl, cocaine, oxycodone, and marijuana. Metzler was found guilty on two counts of violating the Federal Controlled Substances Act.
According to court documents, Metzler conspired to receive shipments of carisoprodol from outside of the United States with the intent to distribute these controlled substances within the Eastern District of Louisiana. Following the execution of a search warrant for Metzler’s home, agents recovered multiple controlled substances and documents associated with drug transactions.
Metzler’s sentence includes 69 months of imprisonment, four years of supervised release, and a $200 mandatory special assessment fee. The sentences are to run concurrently with each other. The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the Hammond Police Department, and the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Lynn E. Schiffman of the Narcotics Unit. “We are committed to disrupting and dismantling large-scale drug trafficking operations that threaten the safety and well-being of our communities,” Schiffman said in a statement.
The sentencing of Metzler marks a significant victory for law enforcement in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the Eastern District of Louisiana. As the Grimy Times continues to investigate and report on the complexities of this case, one thing is clear: the consequences for those who engage in large-scale drug trafficking will be severe.
The case is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of drug trafficking on our communities and the importance of continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies to disrupt and dismantle these operations.
