Latrelle LaRoche, 20, took aim at a victim in a Lower Brule Sioux Indian Reservation residence on June 19, 2025, over a debt of cash. He fired a warning shot, then a second time, striking the victim in the abdomen. The victim needed surgery to repair the damage.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs and FBI pieced together the evidence of LaRoche’s crime, which landed him a six-year, six-month stint in federal prison. LaRoche pleaded guilty on February 12, 2026, after being indicted in August 2025.
U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons announced the sentencing of LaRoche on May 11, 2026. The victim suffered serious bodily injury, and LaRoche was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted the case, which falls under the Major Crimes Act – a federal statute requiring violent crimes in Indian Country to be prosecuted in federal court.
