Luis Mesa-Quinones, Illegal Re-entry, Louisiana 2015

LAFAYETTE, La. – A Colombian national has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for re-entering the United States after having been previously deported.

Luis Mesa-Quinones, 39, of Colombia, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard T. Haik on one count of illegal re-entry after being deported on Monday. According to evidence presented at the March 25, 2015 guilty plea, the defendant was arrested on April 7, 2014 in Iberia Parish for driving while intoxicated, failure to yield, driving without a license, and vehicular negligent injury.

After further investigation, it was found that Mesa-Quinones had been previously deported in May of 1998 after being arrested in Harris County Texas for delivering between 4 and 200 grams of cocaine. The United States Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert F. Moore prosecuting the case.

According to the evidence, Mesa-Quinones was arrested on April 7, 2014, for driving while intoxicated, failure to yield, driving without a license, and vehicular negligent injury in Iberia Parish. This led to further investigation that revealed his previous deportation in 1998.

The case highlights the consequences of re-entering the United States after being deported. Mesa-Quinones’ actions have resulted in a 36-month prison sentence, demonstrating the severity of the crime.
