ST. TAMMANY PARISH, Louisiana – The grimy streets of Madisonville witnessed a pivotal moment in the battle against drug crime as Alvarez Joseph Cyprian, 23, pleaded guilty to federal charges of distributing fentanyl, a deadly substance that has plagued communities nationwide.
Cyprian, from Madisonville, Louisiana, admitted his guilt on May 14, 2024, before United States District Judge Susie Morgan. The defendant faced two counts: conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, and actual distribution of the same substance.
The prosecution revealed that Cyprian sold 200 fentanyl pills to an undercover agent for $550 on September 8, 2023, in Covington, Louisiana. This sale marked a significant contribution to the drug trade that has been sweeping through St. Tammany Parish.
According to the Federal Controlled Substances Act, Cyprian’s actions carry severe penalties, including up to 20 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $1,000,000, at least 3 years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00. Sentencing is scheduled for August 15, 2024.
The investigation into Cyprian’s activities was a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorney Rachal Cassagne is overseeing the prosecution.
Cyprian’s plea agreement underscores the relentless pursuit of justice in the face of drug-related crimes, as law enforcement agencies continue to combat the fentanyl crisis that plagues our society.
