In a brazen crime, two men were caught stealing mail from a ‘blue box’ outside a post office in Augusta, Georgia, in December 2024. Michael Jermaine Thompson, 24, of North Augusta, South Carolina, and Robert Dean Plyler, 23, of Augusta, were seen by police opening the mail box and placing the mail in their car trunk. The pursuit that followed ended in a crash, and the men were taken into custody. The motive behind the theft was to commit bank fraud and identity theft, using the stolen mail to deposit checks into a bank account opened by Plyler.
Investigations by the US Postal Inspection Service and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office uncovered a pistol, a large amount of mail, and a US Postal Service key in Thompson’s possession. A total of 131 pieces of mail were recovered, representing 29 victims. The severity of the crime was reflected in the sentences handed down to the two men, with Thompson receiving 60 months in prison and Plyler receiving 38 months.
The sentences also included three years of supervised release and fines, with Thompson fined $2,000. The case highlights the importance of protecting the US mail system and the consequences of committing such crimes. US Attorney Meg Heap stated that the security of the US Mail is vital to commerce and communications, and that mail theft is a serious matter.
The outcome of the case serves as a warning to those who would attempt to violate the mail system, with Heap emphasizing that her office will diligently pursue those who commit such crimes. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies, including the US Postal Inspection Service and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, was instrumental in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
