Man Sentenced for Reentering U.S. Illegally
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Gerardo Hernandez-Barragan, 41, of Mexico, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for reentering the United States after being convicted of an aggravated felony.
Hernandez-Barragan was previously convicted of distribution of marijuana in South Carolina in 2004. He was arrested in January of 2014 following a vehicle stop in Kenmore, New York.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the sentencing, which is the culmination of an investigation by United States Customs and Border Protection under the direction of Randy Howe, Director, Field Operations, and the Kenmore Police Department under the direction of Chief Peter Breitnauer.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie P. Grisanti, who handled the case, stated that Hernandez-Barragan’s illegal reentry poses a significant threat to public safety and national security.
The sentencing highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat transnational crime and protect the integrity of our borders.
Hernandez-Barragan’s conviction serves as a reminder that reentering the United States after a conviction of an aggravated felony is a serious offense with severe consequences.
