Anthony McNair, Possessing Firearm and Ammunition as Convicted Felon and Possessing Drugs, Maryland 2022

⏱ 2 min read

Anthony McNair, a 37-year-old Maryland man, was sentenced to over 13 years in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon and for possessing drugs, including fentanyl, with the intent to distribute. The incident occurred on April 21, 2022, in Suitland, Maryland, when Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) officers conducted a traffic stop on McNair’s vehicle for multiple traffic violations. McNair attempted to flee the scene, but officers removed him from the vehicle and recovered a firearm with nine rounds of .45 caliber ammunition and 19.5 grams of marijuana.

McNair’s sentence, handed down by The Honorable Lydia Kay Griggsby, includes 140 months in federal prison, followed by four years of supervised release. Notably, this sentence will be served consecutive to a 210-month federal sentence McNair received in the District of Columbia for multiple counts of robbery last year.

The case was announced by Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, along with Special Agent in Charge Charles Doerrer, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Chief George Nader, PGPD. The guilty plea revealed that McNair used a “slow roll” technique, driving for 18 seconds before stopping, in an attempt to hide contraband.

McNair’s actions demonstrated a clear disregard for the law and public safety, and his sentence reflects the severity of his crimes. The cooperation between the PGPD, ATF, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office has resulted in a significant conviction, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and firearm possession in Maryland.
