Menominee Woman Charged in Witness Retaliation
A 29-year-old woman from the Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin has been charged with retaliating against a witness in a federal case.
Elmira J. Corn, an enrolled member of the Menominee Indian Tribe, was indicted on November 5, 2019, for Obstructing Justice by Retaliating against a Witness, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1513(b) and 2.
According to the indictment, Corn engaged in conduct that caused bodily harm to the victim on or about October 7, 2019, in retaliation for the victim giving information to law enforcement about a federal offense. If convicted, Corn faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to 3 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment.
The case was investigated by the Menominee Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Native American Drug and Gang Initiative (NADGI).
The case will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier. An indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Corn’s indictment marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat witness intimidation and retaliation in Wisconsin.
The Menominee Indian Reservation has been plagued by gang activity and violence in recent years, and the federal government has taken steps to address these issues.
