Jonathann Uriel Ayala Garcia, a 23-year-old involved in a transnational criminal organization, was indicted for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in Portland, Oregon. The indictment came after a June 2026 arrest, where Ayala Garcia was found with approximately 16.5 kilograms of methamphetamine and 168.3 grams of heroin in his vehicle. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigated the case, which is part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative.
The HSTF initiative aims to eliminate criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. Ayala Garcia’s arrest and indictment are a result of this initiative, which directs the full might of United States law enforcement towards identifying, investigating, and prosecuting crimes committed by these organizations.
Ayala Garcia pleaded not guilty and was ordered to be detained pending a jury trial scheduled to begin on September 15, 2026. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in federal prison, 5 years’ supervised release, and a fine of $10 million.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole Hermann, and U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford for the District of Oregon made the announcement. The DEA and ATF are investigating the case, which highlights the ongoing efforts to combat transnational crime and drug trafficking in the United States.
