⏱ 2 min read

A brazen burglary in Coos County, Oregon, on December 19, 2023, saw four men break into a vault and steal approximately $1 million in cash, gold, silver coins, and at least one firearm. The heist was carried out by Matthew Knapp, Daniel Knapp, and William Travis Cutlip, with Kyle Vanalstine joining in on December 23 to steal an additional 40 firearms. The burglaries were committed in a residential area, with the thieves making off with a large haul of valuable items.

The investigation into the burglary was led by federal authorities, who discovered that Matthew Knapp, a felon, was prohibited from possessing firearms. Despite this, Knapp was found to have been in possession of a stolen pistol, and further investigation revealed a history of messages showing his involvement with firearms and accessories.

As the investigation continued, law enforcement recovered several stolen firearms at Cutlip’s property, which were later found to have been transferred to him by Vanalstine. Vanalstine was also found to be in possession of over one kilogram of methamphetamine, scales, and a loaded pistol when he was stopped by police on January 5, 2024.

The four men have now been sentenced for their roles in the burglary, with Daniel Knapp and William Travis Cutlip each receiving 24 months in federal prison, Kyle Vanalstine receiving 77 months, and Matthew Knapp being sentenced to five years of probation. The sentences bring an end to the case, which highlights the seriousness of firearms theft and the consequences of such crimes.
