A Mexican national, Baltazar Plata Bringas, 31, was busted in Portland, Oregon, on May 26, 2026, during a drug deal, leading to the seizure of over 17.5 pounds of methamphetamine and fentanyl, as well as firearms and $25,000. Plata Bringas, who was unlawfully residing in the United States, was charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, among other offenses. The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to combat cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The motive behind the crime is believed to be linked to Plata Bringas’ involvement in a larger drug trafficking operation. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
According to court documents, Plata Bringas had approximately 17 bags of methamphetamine in his car at the time of his arrest, totaling over 8 kilograms. A search of his residence yielded additional firearms and cash. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on June 24, 2026, and was ordered to be detained pending further court proceedings.
The Oregon Homeland Security Task Force, which includes the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, played a key role in the investigation and prosecution of the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Kerin is handling the prosecution.
