A 51-year-old Honduran national has been found guilty of selling fentanyl that killed a 29-year-old Portland man. Hugo Gomez-Soto was caught with fentanyl powder and counterfeit pills containing fentanyl at the time of his arrest on January 25, 2024.
Gomez-Soto sold the illicit substance to the victim, who overdosed the next day despite receiving life-saving measures, including Narcan. A federal grand jury indicted Gomez-Soto on June 18, 2025, for distribution of fentanyl resulting in death and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.
Gomez-Soto faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison and up to life in prison. He will be sentenced on July 10, 2026.
The investigation was led by the Portland Police Bureau Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit, with assistance from the FBI, DEA, and Homeland Security Investigations.
