Samual Earl Ramu, Drug Trafficking, South Carolina 2022

⏱ 3 min read

A ruthless inmate running a prison drug ring from behind bars has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison. Samual Earl Ramu, 34, orchestrated the distribution of deadly fentanyl, methamphetamine, and marijuana from inside the South Carolina Department of Corrections in Florence, SC.

Ramu used contraband cell phones and even attempted to use drones to drop the illicit substances inside the prison. His operation was a brazen attempt to poison the community and line his own pockets.

Law enforcement officials praised the swift and effective work of their agencies in dismantling Ramu’s operation. ‘Drug traffickers who threaten our communities with deadly substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine cannot hide from Homeland Security Investigations-even behind prison walls,’ said Mark M. Zito, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Ramu’s prior convictions for drug trafficking offenses and his current 15-year state sentence made him a prime target for law enforcement. The verdict serves as a warning to others who would attempt to continue this type of illicit activity.
