Terell Wayne Overton, a 51-year-old Portland man, has been charged with stealing firearms from passengers at the Portland International Airport. In June 2026, multiple victims reported their guns missing after traveling through the airport. The Port of Portland Police received a series of calls from airline passengers who claimed their firearms did not arrive at their destinations. One victim had an Apple AirTag inside the locked case, which led police to Overton and a black backpack containing the stolen handgun.
According to court documents, the investigation began when a victim called to report their firearm was stolen on June 28, 2026. The Apple AirTag information led investigators to Overton, and a search warrant was issued for the black backpack. Inside the backpack, police found a locked handgun case containing the stolen handgun.
Overton made his first appearance in federal court before a U.S. magistrate judge and was ordered released pending further court proceedings. The FBI, Port of Portland Police, and PDX Task Force are investigating the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Kerin prosecuting.
The charges against Overton include felon in possession of a firearm and theft of a firearm. A criminal complaint is only an accusation of a crime, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
