South Bend Man Charged with Narcotics Trafficking
A South Bend man has been charged with a string of serious crimes after a daring sting operation. Bradley Burns, 31, is accused of conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with intent to deliver and being a felon in possession of firearms.
According to investigators, Burns was caught in a traffic stop on Interstate 40 near Oklahoma City on February 5, 2020. A search of his vehicle uncovered 120 pounds of methamphetamine and one kilogram of heroin, disguised as duffle bags.
After leading police on a wild chase, Burns was apprehended at a house on South Kentucky Street in South Bend, where agents found a cache of firearms, including a .38 caliber revolver, an AK-47 style rifle, and an AR style rifle. Other evidence included a money counting machine, receipts for money orders, and a heat sealing machine.
HSI agents obtained a search warrant for the residence and found a small quantity of fentanyl, a cutting agent, and cell phones. If convicted, Burns could face a lengthy prison sentence.
The United States Attorney’s Office emphasizes that a Criminal Complaint is merely an allegation and that all persons are presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty in court.
The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, South Bend Police Department, St. Joseph County Police Department, the Indiana State Police, and Elkhart City Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Schultz is handling the case.
Burns is currently being held without bond. If convicted, any specific sentence to be imposed will be determined by the Judge after a consideration of federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
