Meth Kingpin Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

A Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in the state of South Dakota. Brandon Gustav McGuire, 31, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on November 13, 2018.

According to court documents, McGuire was involved in the distribution of over 500 grams of methamphetamine in the District of South Dakota, with some of the substance being sold to customers in the state and elsewhere. The exact dates of McGuire’s involvement are unclear, but it is believed to have continued until March 20, 2018.

Law enforcement executed a search warrant at McGuire’s residence in Sioux Falls on March 20, 2018, and found a significant amount of evidence, including approximately 16 grams of methamphetamine, five grams of heroin, and a .357 Magnum caliber revolver. The discovery of these items highlights the inherently violent nature of drug trafficking, with firearms often being used by dealers to protect their product and operations.

McGuire was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 4, 2018, and pleaded guilty to the charges on August 23, 2018. He was subsequently sentenced to 147 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer D. Mammenga prosecuting the case. McGuire was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing.

The prosecution of McGuire serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat the sale and distribution of illicit substances. The consequences of McGuire’s actions will serve as a warning to others involved in similar activities, highlighting the risks and repercussions of engaging in the trade.

The investigation into McGuire’s activities also highlights the complex nature of drug trafficking, which often involves the use of firearms and other violence to protect and maintain operations. The cooperation between law enforcement agencies in this case demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts to disrupt and dismantle these operations.

McGuire’s sentence is a significant one, and serves as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities. As the nation continues to grapple with the issue of drug trafficking, cases like McGuire’s will play a crucial role in shaping the conversation and informing policy decisions.
