HOUSTON – In a stunning turn of events, Moises Arvizo Del Carmen, a 49-year-old Mexican citizen residing in Houston illegally, has been sentenced to over seven years for robbing a local taco truck at gunpoint. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the sentence on Thursday.
Del Carmen pleaded guilty to the charges on May 27, and on July 24, U.S. District Judge Ellison handed down a 94-month federal prison term. The non-citizen is anticipated to undergo removal proceedings once his prison sentence is completed.
The crime occurred on September 12, 2023, when Del Carmen broke into the taco truck through the customer window, demanding money at gunpoint from the register. He threatened employees before escaping the scene through the same window in a getaway Hummer adorned with purple flames. The suspect’s identity and vehicle were promptly identified by witnesses.
Three weeks post-robbery, authorities executed a search warrant at Del Carmen’s residence. They uncovered clothing that matched descriptions of items from the crime scene, as well as a firearm. Both the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Houston Police Department played pivotal roles in the investigation.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Smith handled the prosecution under Project Safe Neighborhoods, an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence within communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, this strategy strengthens PSN by focusing on community trust, support for anti-violence organizations, strategic enforcement, and measuring outcomes to make neighborhoods safer.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a federal program that leverages the combined efforts of all levels of law enforcement to tackle violent crime head-on. It demonstrates the commitment to fostering a safer environment for residents across Houston.
