McALLEN, Texas – A 22-year-old Mexican national, Edi Quinones, has been sentenced to a staggering 96 months in prison for transporting child sexual abuse material (CSAM) into the United States, according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
Quinones pleaded guilty on November 8, 2024. His sentence was enhanced after it was revealed that he produced child pornography found on his phone. The court also confirmed that a sexual act occurred while the minor victim was under his custody and control. Despite attempting to mitigate his sentence by claiming a marriage to the minor in Mexico, the court ruled that no legal marriage could exist due to the minor’s age.
On September 11, 2024, Quinones attempted to enter the United States through the Hidalgo Port of Entry with his family. Authorities were alerted when he claimed his ‘wife’ was just 16 years old. A review of his electronic device uncovered numerous CSAM files, including videos depicting Quinones and two minor victims engaged in illegal sexual acts.
Quinones admitted that the victim was 15 at the time of video production. Authorities recovered approximately 20 such videos from the phone. He will be registered as a sex offender and is expected to face removal proceedings after his sentence. The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection.
