Omaha’s Drug Trade Suffers Setback as Mexican Citizen Sentenced
The grim streets of Omaha were hit with a decisive blow today as 23-year-old Antonio Lopez-Tiznado, a citizen of Mexico, was sentenced to over eleven years for his role in a methamphetamine conspiracy.
United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Lopez-Tiznado was handed a sentence of 135 months by United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher. The sentence comes with no chance of parole within the federal system, and upon release from prison, he will face deportation. Additionally, Lopez-Tiznado has been ordered to serve a three-year term of supervised release.
The case took a dramatic turn on July 19, 2021, when Omaha police officers intercepted a vehicle with Lopez-Tiznado as a passenger. After obtaining consent to search the vehicle, law enforcement uncovered nearly two pounds of methamphetamine. The residence where Lopez-Tiznado and his co-defendants, Mauricio Canales-Santiago and Karen Barba-Franco, lived was subsequently searched under a warrant. Authorities discovered an additional 19 pounds of the illegal substance, indicating that the trio had been distributing meth for at least two weeks before their apprehension.
Barba-Franco has already pleaded guilty to her charges and is set to be sentenced on March 29, 2023. Canales-Santiago’s trial is still pending.
This high-profile case was primarily investigated by the Omaha Police Department, marking a significant victory for local law enforcement in their battle against drug trafficking.
