Mexican National Lugo-Campos Sentenced for Illegal Reentry

Las Vegas – In a stark reminder of the consequences of illegal reentry, Mexican national Otoniel Lugo-Campos faced justice today. Sentenced by United States District Judge Richard F. Boulware II, Lugo-Campos received 72 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his unlawful return to the United States.

With a history of violent crimes and previous deportations, Lugo-Campos had been removed from the country twice before, yet he persistently returned. His latest transgression occurred on March 16, 2021, when he was found in the U.S., having last been deported on October 21, 2014.

In 2000, Lugo-Campos faced his first deportation after a felony drug conviction and multiple probation violations. He returned to the United States in 2008, where he committed five convenience store robberies with a butcher knife, leaving two clerks injured. After serving time, he was deported again in 2014.

Lugo-Campos’ criminal spree continued when he unlawfully entered the United States once more. On March 8, 2021, he shot his former girlfriend, her new boyfriend, and a neighbor upon entering her apartment. The shooting followed an earlier incident where he beat her with a pipe, leaving a head wound requiring staples.

While in state custody, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents discovered Lugo-Campos’ illegal status and he pleaded guilty to one-count of Deported Alien Found in the United States.

Acting United States Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada and Salt Lake City Field Office Director Jason Knight announced the sentence. The ICE Salt Lake City, Las Vegas Sub-Office investigated the case, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada prosecuted it. The public is encouraged to report crimes and suspicious activity through 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or online tip form.
