Teodulfo Sanchez-Lopez, Methamphetamine and Heroin Trafficking, New Mexico 2015

A Mexican national has been sentenced to 77 months in prison for his role in a federal narcotics trafficking conviction.

Teodulfo Sanchez-Lopez, 24, of Sinaloa, Mexico, was sentenced in federal court in Las Cruces, N.M., for his conviction related to methamphetamine and heroin trafficking.

Sanchez-Lopez was arrested on May 4, 2015, and charged with conspiracy and possession of heroin and methamphetamine with intent to distribute. A search warrant executed on a storage locker in Roswell, N.M., on March 13, 2014, revealed 439.9 grams of methamphetamine and 290.6 grams of heroin.

The investigation, led by the Las Cruces office of the DEA and the Chaves County Metro Narcotics Task Force, revealed that Sanchez-Lopez had packaged the methamphetamine and heroin found in the storage locker.

Sanchez-Lopez pleaded guilty to the indictment and admitted to packaging the narcotics in Phoenix, Ariz., in January 2014, for distribution by others. His fingerprints were found on the packaging of the methamphetamine and heroin.

The case was prosecuted as part of the New Mexico Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative, a program launched in January 2015 to address the national opioid epidemic in New Mexico. The HOPE Initiative has five components: prevention and education, treatment, law enforcement, reentry, and strategic planning.

Sanchez-Lopez will be deported after he completes his prison sentence. The HOPE Initiative is a partnership between the UNM Health Sciences Center, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and other community stakeholders to protect communities from the dangers associated with heroin and opioid painkillers and reducing the number of opioid-related deaths in New Mexico.
