Two Mexican nationals have been sentenced for their roles in a massive cocaine conspiracy that brought the deadly drug to cities across the country.
Genaro Torres, 58, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in distributing and possessing with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. Torres, who was convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, also forfeited $750,000 in cash, which was deemed proceeds from his illicit activity.
Torres’ co-defendant, Maria E. Garcia, 64, was sentenced to four years in prison for her role in the conspiracy. The duo was found to have been involved with a group of individuals that distributed over 150 kilograms of cocaine from Mexico in the United States between 1991 and 2008.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank H. Sherman stated that the defendants were part of a larger group that brought cocaine to Rochester, as well as other cities including Houston, Chicago, New York City, Atlanta, and the New England region.
Torres was found to have acted as a manager or supervisor in the extensive drug distribution activity, arranging the delivery of multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine to individuals in Houston, Texas. Garcia was found to have sold cocaine in Houston after being supplied by Torres.
Both Torres and Garcia are expected to be deported following the completion of their sentences. The sentencings are the result of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force investigation involving the Drug Enforcement Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Rochester Police Department, and the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. praised the hard work of law enforcement partners and prosecutors, saying, ‘It’s often said that crime doesn’t pay and in this case that is especially true.’ He added, ‘The hard work of our law enforcement partners and prosecutors has led to the take down of a major drug conspiracy. But in addition, we have literally taken the profit out of this particular crime syndicate.’
