Former Grand Island Resident Sentenced for Possessing Child Pornography

Michael Gonzalez, a 44-year-old former resident of Grand Island, Nebraska, has been sentenced to prison for possessing child pornography. On April 9, 2021, Chief United States District Judge John M. Gerrard handed down the sentence in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Gonzalez, who was identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) for uploading an image of child pornography in January 2016, will serve 48 months in prison. Following his release, he will be required to register as a sex offender.

The charges against Gonzalez stem from a search warrant served at his residence. Law enforcement seized numerous electronic items, including a laptop, desktop computers, a cell phone, and other storage media. Forensic examination of the equipment revealed 19 images of child pornography depicting children under the age of twelve.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project is led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, who work to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet.

Michael Gonzalez, the defendant, is required to serve 6 years on supervised release after completing his prison sentence. There is no parole in the federal system.

The case was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol.
