A 31-year-old Michigan man has admitted to a serious crime in West Virginia. Donovan Swift, of Shelby Township, was found guilty of Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine Base in Monongalia County.
The offense, which occurred in October 2020, carries significant penalties. Swift faces up to 20 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $1,000,000.
The sentence handed down by a judge will be determined by the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account the seriousness of the offenses and the defendant’s prior criminal history, if any.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Zelda E. Wesley is handling the case on behalf of the government. The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives and the Mon Metro Drug Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the proceedings. The court will now determine the final sentence for Swift, who will undoubtedly face significant consequences for his actions.
It’s worth noting that possession with intent to distribute cocaine base is a serious crime that can have devastating effects on individuals and communities. Swift’s decision to plead guilty may have been a difficult one, but it’s a step towards accountability.
As the investigation into Swift’s activities continues, it’s clear that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to keep communities safe. The cooperation between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives and the Mon Metro Drug Task Force is a shining example of this dedication.
