Joseph Lovell Cook, a 22-year-old man from Detroit, Michigan, has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for violating firearm laws.
A federal court in Huntington, West Virginia, handed down the sentence to Cook, who had previously pleaded guilty to possessing an SKS semi-automatic assault rifle on July 3, 2014, in Barboursville, West Virginia.
Cook, who was prohibited from possessing the firearm due to a 2010 assault with a dangerous weapon conviction in Michigan and a 2012 drug trafficking conviction in Cabell County, West Virginia, has been held accountable for his actions.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI Drug Task Force and the DEA Task Force, with Assistant United States Attorneys Greg McVey and Jennifer Rada Herrald responsible for the prosecution.
Cook’s sentence is a result of his involvement in Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing gun crime in the United States by networking local programs targeting gun crime.
United States Attorney Booth Goodwin announced the sentence, highlighting the importance of holding individuals accountable for violating firearm laws.
The sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of possessing firearms in violation of the law, and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to keep communities safe.
