CBP Officer Indicted for Excessive Force, Lying Under Oath
A shocking indictment against a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer has revealed the extent of corruption within the agency. Miguel Delgado Jr., a CBP officer stationed at the Bridge of Americas Port of Entry in El Paso, Texas, has been charged with two counts of deprivation of rights under color of law and one count of obstruction of justice.
According to the indictment, Delgado used excessive force against two separate individuals on June 15, 2020, and October 20, 2019. Both victims suffered bodily injury as a result of the officer’s unlawful actions.
The indictment also claims that Delgado falsified a document in a federal investigation, further obstructing justice. This is a serious offense that could result in a lengthy prison sentence. If convicted, Delgado faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each of the use of force incidents and 20 years for submitting a false report.
Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas Jaime Esparza, and other law enforcement officials made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patricia Aguayo and Trial Attorney Olimpia Michel are prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and Delgado is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. This case highlights the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies and the importance of upholding the public’s trust.
As the investigation continues, Grimy Times will provide updates on this developing story. In the meantime, the community is left to wonder how such egregious acts of corruption could occur within an agency sworn to protect and serve.
