MOBILE, AL – Jhordis Deshon Woods, 34, of Mobile, is heading back to prison after receiving a 92-month sentence today for being a felon in possession of two firearms. United States District Judge Kristi K. DuBose didn’t just stop at the prison time; Woods will also spend five years under supervised release after he’s done serving his time.
This wasn’t a first-time offense, not by a long shot. Woods pled guilty back in December 2016 to the gun charge, a charge that surfaced after a thorough investigation by the Mobile Police Department’s Narcotics and Vice Unit. The unit had been building a case against Woods, arranging four separate controlled buys of marijuana in May of 2016. That’s what kicked everything off.
The investigation didn’t stop at marijuana. Armed with a search warrant, police raided Woods’s apartment and uncovered more than just weed. They found two semiautomatic pistols, along with the marijuana and a stash of cash. It painted a clear picture of a man actively involved in illegal activity and willing to arm himself while doing it.
Woods’s rap sheet reads like a laundry list of offenses. Prior to this conviction, he’d already been convicted of two counts of Robbery 1st, Theft of Property 1st, Possession of Marijuana 1st, and Possession/Receipt of a Controlled Substance. Add to that a pile of misdemeanor offenses, and it’s clear Woods has been a persistent problem for law enforcement for years.
Acting United States Attorney Steve Butler of the Southern District of Alabama made the announcement, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime. “This sentence reflects our commitment to keeping firearms out of the hands of convicted felons,” Butler stated. The case was a joint effort between the Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, demonstrating a coordinated approach to tackling gun crime in the region.
Assistant United States Attorney Sean P. Costello handled the prosecution for the government. For those seeking further details, a copy of the press release is available on the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama website: http://www.justice.gov/usao/als/. Woods’s criminal enterprise is over – for now.
