MISSOULA – The grim tale of financial deceit in Kalispell has reached its conclusion as Rita Ann Pierce, a former bookkeeper, was today sentenced to serve 14 months in federal prison for her elaborate scheme that siphoned almost $500,000 from Pierce Manufacturing. The U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme announced the sentence, which is to be followed by three years of supervised release.
Pierce, now 59, pleaded guilty last month to wire fraud charges. U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen presided over the sentencing hearing that brought closure to this white-collar crime saga.
The investigation into Pierce Manufacturing’s financial woes began when the company, which started as a welding shop in 1974 and evolved into a manufacturing business, couldn’t fathom its sudden lack of profits. An audit revealed the heart-wrenching truth: Rita Ann Pierce was the thief. As bookkeeper, she cunningly concealed her theft by fictitiously entering names into the ledger and steering legitimate transactions to her own private bank account.
Between 2016 and 2020, the court documents reveal that Pierce embezzled a staggering $496,881.03, a crime that not only damaged the family-owned business but also shattered the trust of its stakeholders. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Weldon led the prosecution against Pierce, while the FBI conducted the meticulous investigation.
As the courtroom echoed with the finality of justice, the sentence handed down was no less than a blow to the city of Kalispell, which had watched in shock as one of its own turned into a criminal.
