ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – In a hard-hitting blow to the region’s drug trade, Nelson Cortes, 50, of Beverly, West Virginia, has been sentenced to 65 months in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine.
Cortes, whose illegal activities sometimes reached into his own home, was operating within Randolph County. His sentence sends a stark message about the consequences of drug trafficking in the Mountain State.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Warner successfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, demonstrating the commitment to justice in the region.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving key agencies such as the Mountain Region Drug Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative; the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office; and the Buckhannon Police Department. Their combined efforts led to Cortes’ downfall.
