Michael Scott Hillwig, 58, of Camden, New Jersey, has been hit with a massive federal indictment for a spree of identity theft and bank fraud that spanned Florida and South Carolina. The charges, brought by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida, include two counts of bank fraud, two counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count of false use or forgery of a passport.
Hillwig appeared in federal court on August 27, 2025, where he was arraigned before United States Magistrate Judge Martin A. Fitzpatrick. His trial is set for October 27, 2025, before United States District Judge Mark Walker. If convicted, the New Jersey man could face up to thirty years’ imprisonment for each bank fraud count, a mandatory minimum of two years for each aggravated identity theft charge, and up to ten years for forging a passport.
The investigation into Hillwig’s alleged crimes was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, and Holmes County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Harley W. Ferguson is handling the prosecution.
Despite the serious charges, it’s important to note that an indictment is merely an allegation, and Hillwig is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
