A brutal prison gang that ruled New Mexico’s correctional facilities and streets with fear for over 40 years has finally been dismantled. The Syndicato de Nuevo Mexico, also known as SNM, was a ruthless racketeering enterprise that operated from 1980 to 2024.
Founded in the aftermath of a prison riot in 1980, SNM grew into a sophisticated crime syndicate with a ‘blood in, blood out’ philosophy. Members were forced to commit acts of violence to gain entry into the gang, and those who cooperated with authorities were brutally silenced.
Investigations revealed that SNM trafficked fentanyl and methamphetamine both inside prisons and in communities across New Mexico, using intimidation and violence to maintain control. Federal authorities charged 156 individuals with 325 overt acts, including 13 murders committed both inside and outside state facilities.
The decade-long investigation employed extensive and long-term techniques, including undercover drug and firearm purchases, confidential human sources, and court-authorized wire intercepts. It was one of the largest RICO cases in New Mexico’s history.
