New Orleans – A grim reminder of the city’s ongoing battle with drug trafficking: Eugene McGee, 28, was sentenced to a staggering 100 months in federal prison after pleading guilty for his role in a heroin distribution conspiracy.
The U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser announced that McGee, along with two co-conspirators, was charged with distributing and possessing with intent to distribute over 100 grams of heroin in the New Orleans metropolitan area from June 2015 to June 2017.
Court documents reveal that an extensive investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) group led to multiple court-authorized wiretaps. These taps included cell phones used by Akeem Fleming, another member of the conspiracy, for communication with customers and co-conspirators.
Judge Martin L.C. Feldman handed down the severe sentence for McGee, who was also ordered to pay $1,434.49 in restitution to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office for damages caused during an attempted escape on October 26, 2016. Co-defendants Fleming and Terrance Milton were sentenced to 131 and 60 months respectively.
U.S. Attorney Strasser commended the HIDTA Task Force Group of the DEA for their diligent work in this case, along with support from Narcotics Group IV at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Gretna Major Crimes Task Force, and Louisiana State Police. Assistant United States Attorneys Shirin Hakimzadeh and André Jones led the prosecution.
