Jamestown Nurse Handed 8-Year Prescription Scam
A former nurse at a Veterans Affairs Community Based Outpatient Clinic has pleaded guilty to stealing prescription forms and forging the names of a nurse practitioner to distribute oxycodone in Jamestown, New York.
According to investigators, Samilyn Olson, 47, forged the nurse practitioner’s name and wrote prescriptions for oxycodone on eight occasions between May and September 2010. The prescriptions were then filled by Olson or others at a local pharmacy in Jamestown and distributed.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy C. Lynch stated that the defendant stole prescription forms from her former workplace, where she was employed at the time of the crime. The clinic provides medical services to VA patients in the area.
The investigation, led by the Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, uncovered the massive prescription scam, which could have potentially harmed many patients. The Office of Inspector General, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey G. Hughes, Northeast Field Office, worked alongside the Veterans Affairs Police Department, under the direction of Chief Michael Messina, and the Jamestown Police Department, under the direction of Chief Harry Snellings.
Olson’s plea comes with a hefty price tag – she could face up to 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine. The sentencing is scheduled for May 2, 2014, at 12:30 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
The case highlights the dangers of prescription abuse and the importance of medical professionals upholding the law. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen whether more individuals will be charged in connection to the oxycodone conspiracy.
Olson’s actions have left the community shaken, and many are calling for stricter regulations on prescription medications. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
