A 20-year con job turned 65-year-old Ohio man John Kersey into a prisoner today. The former financial advisor from Maineville, Ohio, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for running an $8.6 million Ponzi scheme that targeted friends and family.
Kersey, a trusted figure, convinced his clients to move their investments to other funds, only to steal the money and use it for personal expenses like credit card bills, insurance premiums, and real estate payments.
He kept his scheme going by providing fake financial documents, charts, and graphs to his victims, many of whom were in vulnerable situations. After one victim’s spouse passed away, Kersey promised to take care of her finances, but instead, he stole her money.
Kersey was charged federally in June 2025 after a long investigation by the FBI. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud in June 2025.
